The last thing I want to do is join the "male bashing" that goes on so often in our culture. After all, I am of the same species! But many of you men need courage. You need to walk like men.
Oh, we may try to go through life with a John Wayne swagger, but we're like milk toast, desperately in need of some courage. We need to stop whimpering and making excuses and start walking like real men.
How? By following God's Word.
In 2 Kings 22 and 23, we read that King Josiah was a man who sought after God. But his life changed when God's Word was rediscovered. He called the people to a renewed covenant before God (see 2 Kings 23:3, above). And God moved through Josiah to crush the wickedness of his country like a hurricane crumbles houses as if they were made out of toothpicks.
For years, Barbara asked me to lead our family in morning devotions. Now that wasn't something I had growing up-an excuse I used for awhile. Finally, I realized God was calling me to be the spiritual leader in our family.
You know what? I'm not batting a thousand, but I am beginning many days by praying over my kids, reading a passage of Scripture and helping them to apply it. Some days the passage concerns the fighting and screaming and the rush to the car to get to school.
The point is I've decided to stay on the job and not quit. A lot of dads just focus on their failures and never decide what they are going to do to start walking like men.
